Early voting is starting in several states this week as the 2026 midterm elections are less than a month away.
In some states, voters can cast ballots as early as September. Most, though, open early voting
at some point in October ahead of Election Day on Nov. 3.
Forty-seven states and Washington, DC, offer some form of early voting, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
While the rules, locations and timing of early voting varies depends based on where you live, the option to cast a ballot before Election Day makes the process more accessible for Americans.

Early voting dates and rules vary by state. Three states – Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire – do not have early voting, per NCSL.

When are midterm elections?
The midterm general elections, which will be key in determining partisan control of Congress, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
All 435 districts in the House of Representatives and 33 seats in the Senate are up for election in the midterms, per Ballotpedia.
