New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan’s new book, Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, is offering new insight into an important Trump family relationship.

Barron Trump, the president’s youngest child, prefers to keep a low profile, but don’t mistake his public distance from the close bond he shares with his father behind closed doors. In September 2025, right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated, and it was Barron who relayed the news to Donald Trump, per the book.

In an excerpt printed in The New York Times, Haberman and Swan write that the then-19-year-old was in a “state of panic” because he was concerned that his dad would be “targeted again” after the July 2024 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Like Kirk, Donald Trump loved to speak in front of large crowds, and Barron was worried about the possibility of escalating violence.

“Calm down, honey, calm down,” the president said, per the excerpt, while noting that he was “plainly unnerved himself.”

The book offers insight into a relatively mysterious father-son relationship compared with that of his older brothers, Donald Jr., 48, and Eric, 42, who play a big part in Donald Trump’s politics and businesses. Still, Barron maintained a crucial role in the 2024 election by recommending that his father speak to younger voters with Gen Z-aligned podcasts.

Barron made sure his dad made appearances on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast, and The Joe Rogan Experience.

“Barron has been very involved in recommending a number of the podcasts that we should do,” Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller told Politico‘s Playbook Deep Dive podcast in 2024. “I got to tell you, hats off to the young man. Every single recommendation he’s had has turned out to be absolute ratings gold that’s broke the internet. When you look at the impact of podcasts or YouTube shows — non-traditional media — part of the thing is you’re meeting voters where they’re at.”

The president also bragged about his youngest child in May 2024 on the Kayal and Company radio show. “He’s a little on the tall side. I will tell you, he’s a tall one, but he is a good-looking guy,” he said, via The Guardian. “And he’s really been a great student. And he does like politics. It’s sort of funny. He’ll tell me sometimes, ‘Dad, this is what you have to do.’”

That sound advice might have helped Donald Trump win the election in 2024, especially among Gen Z male voters. So, Donald Trump may have Barron to thank for his return to the White House.
